Yoff Sustainable Wastewater System
This is a Project. It was designed by Environment and Development Action-Relay for Participatory Urban Development. It is dated 2002–2011. Its medium is manholes, pits, pvc pipes, drains, gravel filters.
Yoff, an urban area bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the dense city of Dakar, Senegal, is rapidly urbanizing, resulting in insufficient infrastructure and services. Narrow streets prevent access for sanitation trucks to properly dispose of wastewater, and Yoff’s residents often dump used household water on the beach, resulting in significant loss of water and pollution. In 2002, a branch of Environment and Development Action (ENDA) collaborated with Yoff residents to design a gravity-fed wastewater system that collects household greywater in small settling tanks before sending it “downstream” to larger collection basins where it is treated with aquatic plants. The recycled greywater is then used for irrigation and toilet systems. Signs painted by community members educate others on proper disposal of used water in the system.
