Sangli Inclusive Planning

This is a Project. It was designed by Shelter Associates and Baandhani. It is dated 2009–2013.

In Sangli, India, a small city south of Mumbai, nearly 15% of the population is estimated to live in slums. When NGO Shelter Associates developed a citywide plan of the urban poor, visualizing the settlement using socioeconomic data and maps, city officials could see exactly where the slums were and generated critical data for city design. Shelter Associates worked with Baandhani, an informal federation of poor women and men, and used Google Maps to show slum dwellers their locations in the city, and fought to help them avoid being uprooted. The site design incorporates open spaces, while housing plans remain flexible for the residents to customize their personal space.
