Pocket Reconstruction

This is a Project. It was designed by Renu Khosla, Nandita Gupta and Sukant Shukla. It is dated 2008–2013. Its medium is models: board, paper, plywood; door: mild steel.

Savda Ghevra is a large resettlement colony forty kilometers (twenty-five miles) from the center of New Delhi, India. Starting in 2007 with the first generation of settlers, the Center for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE) engaged the community—armed with knowledge and expertise—to contribute to improved housing plans and basic service designs. CURE’s housing designs enable independent access for additional rental income, and modified rat-trap bond brick walls—bricks overlap and break the joint below—bear loads for two floors. Since much activity takes place on the street, new streetscape designs increase social engagement and simple colored pavers delineate children’s play and learning spaces.
