Millennium School Bamboo Project
This is a Project. It was architect: Eleena Jamil Architect. It is dated 2008–2010. Its medium is bamboo, reinforced concrete, woven reed, metal decking.
The Philippine islands are hit with twenty to thirty typhoons every year. In order to shift investment priorities from post-disaster relief to more sustainable solutions, Illac Diaz of My Shelter Foundation organized the Millennium Schools Design Competition. Diaz called for the design of a school structure that could withstand 93-mph winds. The winning design, by Eleena Jamil, was inspired by vernacular houses found in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, the sloping roof and shaded veranda on one side provide shade for informal teaching or play. The bamboo and traditional woven-reed ceiling allows airflow and is easy to build and maintain, while a raised concrete platform keeps floors dry in the rainy season.
