Diadema Reurbanization
This is a Project. It is dated 1983–2013.
In Diadema, near São Paulo, efforts to reduce high crime and poverty rates focused on social and physical inclusion through participatory budgeting and planning. The community helped determine priorities for the annual budget, and also had a voice in reurbanization meetings with architects, engineers, and social workers from the Housing Secretariat. As a result, a municipal land-tenure program granted favela residents located on public land a “right to use” the land for 90 years, and households located in unsafe locations were cooperatively relocated into new housing. State-of-the-art hospitals, such as the Quarteirão da Saúde, provide quality healthcare to the city’s poorest residents, and community health agents deliver aid to the most vulnerable residents.
