Textile, Manhattan
This is a Textile. It was designed by Alexander Hayden Girard and manufactured by Herman Miller Textiles. It is dated 1958. Its medium is cotton, wool, viscose rayon and its technique is screen printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Alexander Girard’s Manhattan is one of many designs in the mid-century period featuring the rapidly rising skyline of Manhattan. Girard’s is among the most abstract, with simple, floating grids of squares in various sizes standing in for the windows of New York’s skyscrapers. The museum also holds Girard’s original drawing for this design, in ink on tracing paper.
