Sugar Bowl With Lid

This is a Sugar bowl with lid. It was designed by Jutta Sika and manufactured by Wiener Porzellan Josef Böck and produced by Wiener Werkstätte. It is dated ca. 1902. Its medium is molded and glazed porcelain with silver overlay. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Sika started studying at Vienna’s Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in 1897 and shortly after began studying under Koloman Moser. In 1900, she contributed to the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, having been personally selected by Moser to represent the Kunstgewerbeschule. In 1901, she was a founding member of the Wiener Kunst im Hause (Viennese Art in the Home) a group of students who created several interiors exhibited at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeverein (Union of Applied Art). These interiors exemplified the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) notion that would be greatly popularized by both Moser and Josef Hoffmann’s work under the Wiener Werkstätte (1903–32). Objects such as this sugar bowl therefore were not designed to stand alone, but instead produced to be a part of a larger set that would then coordinate with an entire room interior. This sugar bowl relates in pattern and shape to one Sika chose for a porcelain tea and coffee service made in the same year and for the same manufacturer, Josef Böck’s Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur (1986-83-1/5). Similar to the pattern on her ceramic pieces, the circular motifs on the sugar bowl are deliberately placed to accentuate the form of the vessel, here growing from top to bottom. This piece’s metallic accents on a porcelain body reflect Austro-Hungarians’ fascination with iridized surfaces in this period following archeological excavations that produced ancient forms with a naturally oxidized and iridized surface. This sugar bowl also illustrates Sika’s ability to rework and expand upon her designs in various mediums and colorways.
