Blue Topaz Amphora Necklace
This is a necklace. It was made by Katharine Wood. It is dated 2014 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is raised and cast silver, champlevé enamel, faceted blue topaz. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The necklace, titled "Blue Topaz Amphora" is a recent example of the work of enamel artist Katharine Wood. The necklace exhibits the characteristics for which Wood is best known, namely the use of champlevé enamel and the combination of sources of design. Indeed, the design of the central enamel element of the necklace was inspired by an Iranian glass two-handled vessel with a pierced base that dates from the 4th-5th century A.D. The four enamel plates joined by the silver double-chains (two on each side of the central element) are inspired by an Iranian ceramic fragment with Arabic inscriptions that date from the late 9th century.
In addition to being a representative work of an important enamel artist and teacher, the necklace is also representative of a contemporary trend in jewelry, which has seen a resurgence of enameling, and a tendency to incorporate motifs from the Renaissance and other periods/civilizations.
