Poster, Freddy Johnson and His Harlemites
This is a Poster. It was designed by Charles Delaunay and printed by Imprimerie R de Gonell. It is dated 1934. Its medium is offset lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Freddy Johnson (1904-1961) was an American Jazz pianist and vocalist. After a few years of performing in the United States he traveled to Europe in 1928. Johnson worked with various bands in Paris until February 1934. During that period he made recordings with the Quintette du Hot Club, which had been co-founded by the designer of this poster, Jazz promoter Charles Delaunay. This poster, designed by Delaunay, promoted the band Freddy Johnson and His Harlemites after their recordings in Paris in late 1933 for the American label Brunswick Records. The recordings included the standard "I Got Rhythm" and the song "Harlem Bound." The band Freddy Johnson and His Harlemites was short-lived, but included Arthur Briggs on trumpet and Juan Fernandez on bass. The focal point of Delaunays black and white poster is Johnson's face, presenting him as a bandleader. The likeness of Johnson is bracketed by softly rendered anonymous jazz musicians playing an assortment of instruments.
