The earthquake that devastated Tokyo in 1923, in conjunction with the mass relocation of young people to the urban area, prompted the wholesale reinvention of Tokyo as a sophisticated, modern city. A rapidly-expanding network of commuter rail lines encouraged suburban living. This mid-20th-century design reflects the evolution of urban and suburban landscape as a hallmark of modernity.
