In 1971, thousands of prisoners at Attica Prison in New York participated in what became known as the Attica Uprising, which soon became the deadliest in United States history. The following year, Faith Ringgold published The United States of Attica as a “map of American violence.” Ringgold’s hand-drawn rendering of the contiguous 48 United States enumerates uprisings and acts of violence that occurred in this country since the colonial era.
It is credited Museum purchase through the American Women's History Initiative Acquisitions Pool, administered by the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, and from the General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
