Window Shade (USA)
This is a Window shade. It is dated 1850–75 and we acquired it in 1983. Its medium is hand painted on canvas support. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
During the mid-nineteenth century, draperies and decorative window shades were signals of a refined and respectable home. For a middle-class family with limited income, a window shade was a more affordable option than curtains. This window shade displays a sampling of four available framing styles to which the client could add a central medallion of their choice, typically flowers, landscapes, or architectural scenes.
Wall Label from exhibition, "Multiple Choice, From Sample to Product," Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York, NY.
