Sample Book, Paisley Collection
This is a Sample book. It was manufactured by Manuscreens, Inc.. It is dated 1966 and we acquired it in 2010. Its medium is screen-printed, flock, vinyl, foil, mylar. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This sample book for the Paisley Collection is characteristic of the historic revivalism that was popular in the late 1960s. As the title suggests, all the designs are variations on the paisley motif. While many of the patterns show traditional styling, they have all been reinterpreted with a 1960s edge. The colors are vibrant, almost fluorescent, and the screenprinting and flocking on foil add new depth with a contemporary twist. The collection contains eight designs, each shown in multiple colorways. Paisley patterns, as well as flocking and vinyl, were very popular on wallcoverings at this time. Introduced in 1966, this collection remained popular until at least 1974.
The Paisley Collection was produced by Manuscreens, Inc., a New York-based company founded in the 1950s by Morton Jonap. Manuscreens was one of only a few companies that designed, produced, and sold their own wallcoverings, which allowed for color and ground customization
While the museum’s collection contains a number of sample books with traditional patterns from this period, this would be the first example to contains patterns that have been updated with contemporary colors and materials. This would also be the first example of papers by Manuscreens, Inc. in the museum’s collection. This proposed acquisition complements the museum’s existing collection of papers from the 1960s that have been reprinted in the historic revival style using very strong, updated colorways.
