Textile, Veil curtain
This is a Textile. It was designed by Ritva Puotila and manufactured by Woodnotes. It is dated 2007–08 and we acquired it in 2011. Its medium is spun paper yarn and its technique is knitted. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Woodnotes, founded in 1987 by Finnish textile designer Ritva Puotila and her son, Mikko, specializes in the development of spun paper yarn products—from room dividers and furniture to rugs and window treatments. The company uses both advanced technologies and handcraftsmanship to create elegant products made from an ecologically produced renewable resource: wood. The yarn is spun from durable heavyweight kraft paper, which is biodegradable and can be recycled. Because of the density of the fibers, paper yarn collects neither dust nor dirt—an important quality, especially for those who suffer from allergies. Environmental concerns play a central role in the development of Woodnotes products. The company’s white paper is produced without the use of chlorine gas, and the dyes used to color yarns contain neither halogen-organic compounds nor heavy metals.
The purity and simplicity of its design, the combination of unbleached paper with simple knitting, and its sustainable production techniques, all make the Veil curtain an important addition to the museum’s collection.
