Model for a Pulpit Model For A Pulpit
This is a model for a pulpit. It is dated ca. 1850 and we acquired it in 2007. Its medium is oak. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
No. 3
Hexagonal pulpit model
England, ca. 1850
Stained oak
Promised gift of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene V. Thaw
While most of the staircase models in the collection were made in France as
part of the compagnonnage movement, this pulpit model was made to
demonstrate style rather than mastery of technique. The hexagonal form and
Gothic revival detail are the focus, not the ladder-like stairs to reach the
pulpit, which contrasts with the sophisticated stairs on the pulpit model in
the central display.
