Ceiling Border (USA)
This is a Ceiling border. It is dated 1880–90 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This highly decorative ceiling corner border offers a solution to the unadorned ceiling. This ornament is very indicative of the period both in its color and motif. It was popular to paper ceilings from the 1850s into the 1950s. Towards the end of the 19th century, very elaborate ceiling decorations were quite popular. Most of the “Painted Ladies,” San Francisco’s illustrious Victorian homes, sport ceiling ornaments of this type.
The museum has a number of ceiling ornaments in the collection. This ceiling corner border would add to the representation of the vast variety of ceiling decorations available to the consumer during the period.
