Frieze (USA)
This is a Frieze. It is dated 1905–15 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is machine-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This is an independent landscape frieze. These were very popular from the 1890s through the Arts and Crafts period. This type of frieze could be paired with any available sidewall paper. This particular frieze is quite striking with its elaborate architectural moldings above and the purple mountain vista below. Although the museum has a number of landscape friezes in sample book form, this would be the first large roll of this kind of paper.
