Sidewall (France)
This is a sidewall. It was designed by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. It is dated 1918–23 and we acquired it in 2003. Its medium is machine-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This paper was designed by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, an important figure in early 20th-century design. Ruhlmann began designing wallpapers in 1910, and his designs were shown at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. This paper was designed in 1912 and produced between 1918 and 1923. While better known for his furniture and interior design from the early to mid-1920s, this paper is one of his earlier designs.
This is an unused piece in excellent condition showing two full repeats. It would be the first example of wallpaper designed by Ruhlmann in the museum’s collection.
