Fragment
This is a Fragment. It is dated 1700–1705 and we acquired it in 2000. Its medium is silk, metal-wrapped silk-core yarns and its technique is 4/1 satin damask weave with discontinuous supplementary weft patterning (brocade). It is a part of the Textiles department.
The brocaded blue damask under consideration for acquisition is an example of a European woven bizarre silk—an exotic woven design that is visually disorienting. Bizarre silks are rare as they were only produced for a short period of time; this example was woven about 1700–05. This is an excellent opportunity to add a highly sought-after textile to the museum’s collection.
