Textile, Osterglocken (Narcissus)
This is a Textile. It was designed by Franz von Zülow and manufactured by Wiener Werkstätte. It is dated 1910–12 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is linen and its technique is block printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
The work of Franz Von Zülow helped to set the style for the Wiener Werkstätte’s Textile Department in its early years, which were characterized by bold, graphic designs. In fact, Von Zülow was primarily known as a graphic artist; his prints were sold in the Wiener Werkstätte shop, and they published a portfolio of his original lithographs in 1912. Early in his career, experimented with a type of printing inspired by Japanese katagami stencil printing, which he patented in 1907 as “paper cut printing.” Unlike traditional stencil printing, the heavy outlines of the design were printed in black, and the cut-out voids hand-colored in brilliant tones. The technique created a cloisonné or stained-glass effect, which is reflected in this textile’s design. Von Zulow’s interest in both folk art and Japanese culture also had a lasting impact on the output of the Workshops.
