Book Cover, Jazz Cleopatra
This is a Book cover. It was designed by Carin Goldberg and written by Phyllis Rose and published by Doubleday. It is dated 1989 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Graphic designer Carin Goldberg has created hundreds of innovative book cover designs, including this cover for the first edition of Jazz Cleopatra, a biography of Jazz Age icon Josephine Baker. Goldberg reproduces George Hoyningen-Huene’s famous portrait of Baker, portraying her as a dramatically lit statuesque nude. Channeling the style of the period, Goldberg’s stylized block lettering recalls the geometric forms of Art Deco and the New Typography of the late 1920s.
