Textile, La Demande en Marriage

This is a Textile. It was company: Petitpierre et Cie and produced by Petitpierre Freres. It is dated ca. 1795 and we acquired it in 1995. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed by engraved copper plate on plain weave foundation. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was bequest of Elinor Merrell. It is credited Bequest of Elinor Merrell.

Its dimensions are

Warp: 144 cm (56 3/4 in.). Weft: 100 cm (39 1/4 in.) Both selvedges present. Pattern: height of repeat: 101.5 cm (40 in.) Plate visible under the feet of the gentleman with the telescope. Width of plate: 94.5 cm (37 1/4 in.) allowing almost two inches of white space for seams. Designed for lengths so be sewn together as a half-drop repeat.

It is inscribed

Incomplete cloth mark on back: "GUI: OA" in black within box. This cloth mark is related to a similar "GUI.4 19" on CHNDM 1995-50-8, another example of 'La Demande en Marriage'.
