Chef De Piece (France)
This is a Chef de piece. It is dated 1790–99 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is cotton and its technique is block printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Its dimensions are
Warp: 13 cm (5 1/8 in.). Weft: 92.5 cm (36 1/2 in.) Two incomplete widths sewn together in center. There is a selvedge on each of the pieces seamed together.
It has the following markings
Several incomplete marks on the fabric. On front: large stamp presumably identifying the producer but as the stamp has been printed over the pattern most of it is undecipherable. The top line appers to start with a capital 'M', perhaps for 'manufacture. The second line "Chef=?eu-Du.Department de Seine et M " probably Seine et Marne. "Louise P." within a box. Several incomplete stamped numbers and letters.
