Wellspring Carafe

This is a Carafe. It was designed by Richard Redgrave and manufactured by J.F. Christy and Felix Summerly's Art Manufacturers and produced by Sir Henry Cole (also known as Felix Summerly). It is dated 1842–1852 and we acquired it in 1993. Its medium is glass, vitreous enamel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Sir Henry Cole was a civil servant and most ardent proponent of design reform in England. In 1847 he began producing well designed objects of everyday use under the pseudonym Felix Summerly. Two years later he launched the Journal of Design and Manufacturers. His friends, architects Owen Jones and Matthew Digby Wyatt, and painter Richard Redgrave, were comissioned to design for Cole's manufacture. They also contributed commentaries on design for publication in the Journal. (Toward Modern Design, 1993)

It is credited Museum purchase from Decorative Arts Association Acquisitions Fund in memory of Dona Guimaraes.
