Sidewall, Astronauts & Spaceships
This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by The Prager Company, Inc. and Thibaut. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is machine printed on textured ground. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
With scenes of lunar landings and astronauts charting their progress space wallpapers were looking to the future. This paper pre-dates Sputnik, the Soviet Union’s successful launch of the world’s first satellite in 1957, and the first walk on the moon by Neil Armstrong in 1969. One of many wallpapers featuring space ships and astronauts designed for boys in the 1950s, these were meant to fascinate and amuse as much as to educate.
This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Looking into the Future.
