Ewer (with Basin) Ewer

This is a ewer. It was manufactured by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated ca. 1800 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is porcelain (possibly soft paste), vitreous enamel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Sevres porcelain factory enjoyed royal patronage in the eighteenth century, but was declared state property after the Revolution. In 1800, Napoleon engaged Alexandre Brongniart as director of the factory and made sweeping changes intended to make the factory financially and artistically successful. New ground colors and patterns were introduced by talented painters working at the factory. ( A Royal Gift, 1994-95).

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Jay Ide, in memory of John Jay Ide.

  • Plate (France)
  • tin-glazed earthenware, polychrome overglaze decoration.
  • Gift of George A. Hearn.
