YF-1003 Stool
This is a stool. It was designed by Takenobu Igarashi. It is dated 1989 and we acquired it in 1990. Its medium is cast iron, cast aluminum, steel, molded plastic and rubber. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This stool with an aluminum tripod base, designed by Takenobu Igarashi, is completely portable; it can be easily disassembled and packed for transport. Igarashi borrowed the traditional cast-iron technique used to manufacture teakettles to create the stool’s rippled triangular metal seat. There are two other models —one with a circular rippled seat, the other one is square. To produce the stool, the designer reopened the Yamasho Casting Company, a 900-year-old iron forge that had been closed. The product retains ties to Japanese artisanal culture, yet has a completely modern aesthetic.
