Tablespoon with Scrolling Acanthus Leaf Handle Spoon
This is a spoon. It is dated ca. 1680–90 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

" West country makers struck bowls with floral scrolls, the so-called "lace backs, " sharing the soft metal dies (fig. 14). A Similar picture emerges specialist. In about 1700, wanting to undercut London competition, the enterprising John Elston of Exeter offered to supply forks and "swage", or die-struck spoons, at contract prices to shops in Devon."
