Wooden Church Plate

This is a plate. It was designed by Valentin Semyonovich Shcherbakov and manufactured by State Porcelain Factory and decorated by A. Gromov. It is dated 1919 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is porcelain, enamel. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Henry Shapiro and Ludmilla Shapiro. It is credited The Henry and Ludmilla Shapiro Collection; Partial gift and partial purchase through the Decorative Arts Association Acquisition and Smithsonian Collections Acquisition Program Funds.

It has the following markings

Marks: On back side: hammer, sickle, cog, 1919 hand-painted in blue overglaze; painter's mark (tree-shaped, for A. Gromov) hand-painted in black overglaze. For Gromov mark see Lobanov-Rostovsky, 1990, p. 154, no. 9.
