The Reign of Workers and Peasants Will Be Without End Plate
This is a plate. It was designed by Sergei Vasilievich Chekhonin and made by State Porcelain Factory. It is dated 1920 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is enameled, gilt, glazed and molded porcelain. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The inscription on this plate reads, “The reign of workers and peasants will be without end.” The word “Commune,” with a hammer and sickle, is inscribed in the central panel. Communes, small local councils, were the basic grassroots units of government in the Soviet Communist system.
It is credited The Henry and Ludmilla Shapiro Collection; Partial gift and partial purchase through the Decorative Arts Association Acquisition and Smithsonian Collections Acquisition Program Funds.
