Ewer Ewer
This is a ewer. It was designed by Pitts Harrison Burt and decorated by Matthew Andrew Daly and manufactured by Rookwood Pottery and Gorham Manufacturing Company. It is dated 1894 and we acquired it in 1984. Its medium is earthenware, glaze, silver overlay. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Silver overlay, popular in the late nineteenth century, is the application of silver over a ceramic or glass object, producing the contrast of gleaming silver on another medium. Here the silver is a torsade around a naturalistically decorated
ewer.
