Print, Two Knives

This is a Print. It was print maker: Aegidius Sadeler and after Cherubino Alberti and Francesco Salviati. It is dated ca. 1640 and we acquired it in 1944. Its medium is engraving on off-white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

These Italian designs from the sixteenth century show a strong interest in connecting the human figural form with flatware handles, which was taken up by designers through much of Europe for more than a century afterward ("Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table, 1500 - 2005," May - August 13, 2006).

This object was donated by Dr. William H. Schab. It is credited Gift of William H. Schab.

Its dimensions are

Platemark: 24.6 x 11.6 cm (9 11/16 x 4 9/16 in.) Sheet: 29 x 16.6 cm (11 7/16 x 6 9/16 in.)

It has the following markings

Watermark: Six-pointed star with a crescent on top and a circle and partial crescent (of a crown?) below (cf. Heawood 1131 and 1132, Venice, c. 1610), see ascession card for drawing. Verso: Stamped in brown ink: Cooper Union Museum New York.

It is inscribed

Inscribed, at upper level: "Frac Saluiat. In."; lower left: "CVM PRIVIL./S.C.M. tis"; center: "II"; lower right, "Marco Sadeler excudit"; right knife: "1605". Inscribed in reverse, blade of left knife: "Venter Implor Insaturabilis"; blade of right knife: "Secvra Mens Ivge Convivium".
