Print, Grotesque with Putti and Grape Vines
This is a Print. It was created by Master of the Die. It is dated 1532 and we acquired it in 1944. Its medium is engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This print is one of six engraved by the Master of the Die after grotesque designs by Perino del Vaga, who was a follower of Raphael. An inscription on one print from the series indicates that the images are directly inspired by the rediscovered wall murals of the Domus Aurea, but the fleshy figures and plump acanthus leaves are more suggestive of Renaissance interpretations of the ancient murals.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John I. Kane.
