Flounce (Belgium)

This is a Flounce. It is dated mid-18th century and we acquired it in 1943. Its medium is linen and its technique is mechlin style bobbin lace. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Since lace of the Mechlin type were made with continuous elements, it would have been impossible to have made this flounce as a 22 and 1/2 inch wide length, and with the hundreds of elements and bobbins required to fill such a measurement. This problem was solved by making the lace in separate widths which were sewn together to complete the flounce. Each piece reaches 7 and 1/2 inches at its widest and in this section of the flounce there are 11 seams.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.
