Drawing, Two Copper Gutters, from a 16th-Century Castle, Blois, France, June 1888

This is a Drawing. It was created by Whitney Warren Jr.. It is dated June 1888 and we acquired it in 1943. Its medium is graphite, brush and watercolor on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

From 1885 to 1894, Whitney Warren pursued architectural studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. During that time, he traveled to other parts of France to study the structural details of various cathedrals and châteaux. This drawing was made on one of those trips. Later, when Warren established his own architectural firm (with Charles D. Wetmore) back in New York, his lifelong admiration of European architectural styles was readily evident in such major commissions as the New York Yacht Club (1899) and Grand Central Station (1903-13).
