Women's Gloves (France)
This is a Women's gloves. It is dated early 19th century and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is kid leather and its technique is medallions intaglio printed, stripes hand-painted. It is a part of the Textiles department.
These woman’s gloves would have been the perfect accessory for a high-waisted, short-sleeved Empire gown of the early nineteenth century. The simple white gowns of this period, inspired by classical antiquity and the ideals of the French republic, were worn frequently with accessories that offered touches of color and whimsy to an otherwise simple silhouette. The front of the gloves is intaglio printed with a medallion of the goddess Athena in a tunic-style gown, helmet and spear. Her other hand holds her shield, which is engraved with the image of Medusa. Resting on pedestal behind Athena is her sacred animal, the owl. As the goddess of wisdom and strategy in battle, Athena was the ideal classical heroine for the period. The printed areas have touches of dark pink while light blue squiggles run the length of the gloves.
