Sampler (England)

This is a Sampler. It was embroidered by Elizabethann Luck. It is dated 1804 and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is silk and metal wrapped silk embroidery on wool foundation, cotton and linen tapes and its technique is cross, satin, stem and couching stitches on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was bequest of Mrs. Henry E. Coe. It is credited Bequest of Mrs. Henry E. Coe.

Its dimensions are

38.5 x 35.5 cm (15 3/16 x 14 in.)

It is signed

embroidered "finished march the 28 by elizabethann Luck * daughter to john and mary Luck of sailhurst in sussex Aged 10 years* 1804"

It is inscribed

Embroidered texts "what though in solemn silence all move around the dark terrestial ball? what though nor real voice nor sound amid their radiant orbs be found? in reason's ear they all rejoce and utter forth a glorious v voce for ever singing as they shine.
