Sidewall (England)
This is a sidewall. It is dated ca. 1880 and we acquired it in 1940. Its medium is block-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This design with orange boughs calls to mind the great orangeries of Europe which originated in the Renaissance gardens of Italy. More than greenhouses, these enclosures protecting orange and fruit trees in the cold winter months of northern climates were a symbol of wealth and prestige. The Orangerie at the Palace of the Louvre inspired similar structures across Europe, culminating in the largest one built for Louis XIV at Versailles which housed 3,000 orange trees.
