Pope Urban VIII was an art patron and collector. His pontificate (1623-1644) can be assessed from the point of view of architectural and artistic accomplishments as one of the greatest. Gianlorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini, and Guglielmo della Porta, among many others, were encouraged by his patronage.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors and from Eleanor G. Hewitt Fund.
