Drawing, Wall Decoration for the Drawing Room of the Palace of Caserta
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Nicola Fiore. It is dated 1775 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is pen and black ink, brush and gouache, watercolor on off-white laid paper . It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This delicate elevation drawing for a guest room wall in the Royal Palace at Caserta has the finished quality of a presentation drawing submitted by a designer to their client. Nicola Fiore belonged to a family of craftsmen with a long history of service to the Bourbon court. The fanciful chinoiserie interior presented in this drawing conflicted with the classicizing architecture of Caserta. By this time, the Rococo taste was out of fashion in other European centers.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors and from Eleanor G. Hewitt Fund.
Its dimensions are
62.3 x 54.5cm (24 1/2 x 21 7/16in.)
It is signed
Signed lower right corner: Nicola Fiore
It is inscribed
Signed, dated and inscribed in pen and black ink at lower margin: Stanza diCompagnia del Palazzo Reale di Caserta 1775 Nicola Fiore Regio Ingre [regioIngegnere]
