Matchsafe In The Form Of A Domino
This is a Matchsafe in the form of a domino. It is dated late 19th century and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is celluloid, vulcanite, brass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This matchsafe was designed to look like a domino, utilizing black vulcanite and cream-colored celluloid to imitate the more costly materials ebony and ivory. The reverse is inscribed "Bull & Bell Ropemaker, With E. Cuthbert's Compts," making this game piece-sized container a memorable novelty advertisement as well.
