This is a Matchsafe. It was made by Whiting Manufacturing. Co.. It is dated ca. 1900 and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Often decorated with seductive imagery such as curls of smoke,
matchsafes and cigarette boxes became the snuffbox of the late
nineteenth century.
