Print, Interior and Exterior Views of the Arena of Astley's Amphitheater, Surrey Road, London

This is a Print. It was designed by George Jones and engraved by Wise. It is dated 1815 and we acquired it in 1977. Its medium is etching, hand colored. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Astley's Amphitheater, located near Westminster Bridge, was built in 1770 by Philip Astley, burn in 1794, and was reconstructed in 1803 to show "equestrian drama," even presenting Macbeth and Richard III on horseback. The most successful production was the sensational Mazeppa, 1864.

It is credited Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Freund.
