Pierced Oval Cake Basket Basket

This is a basket. It was made by Thomas Heming and Thomas Heming. It is dated 1758 and we acquired it in 1977. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Mrs. Jerome A. Q. Franks. It is credited Gift of Mrs. J. A. Q. Franks.

On the underside of the basket: [1] “TH” in script, impressed (maker’s mark, Thomas Heming) [2] crowned leopard’s head, impressed (town mark, London) [3] Gothic "C" in a rectangular reserve with canted corners, impressed (London date letter 1758) [4] lion passant in lobed shield, impressed (British standard mark) [5] “46 ..10”, incised (weight or value marks) [6] “London 1758”, incised (city and date) [7] “43 oz.", incised (weight mark) On interior of handle, at center: [1] “TH” in script, impressed (maker’s mark, Thomas Heming) [2] lion passant in lobed shield, impressed (British standard mark)

It is inscribed

Engraved on interior of bowl, on upper banderoles: [1] “SATAN” [2] “ROMAN CAMP. 3D.. NOVr. 1824 on lower banderole: “COELESTES PANDITE PORTÆ”
