Photograph, Hutching's Hotel at the Foot of Sentinel, Yosemite
This is a Photograph. It was photographed by Carleton E. Watkins. It is dated 1861–66 and we acquired it in 1976. Its medium is albumen silver print. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
One of the earliest explorers of the Yosemite Valley, James Mason Hutching also published the first guidebook to the region. Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity in California, published in 1862, provided travelers with descriptions of scenic vistas, a history of the Yosemite and Mariposa region, travel routes from San Francisco via Stockton, and local legends fully illustrated with wood engravings after photographs by Charles Leander Weed, a contemporary of Carleton Watkins. The structure shown here on the banks of the Merced River was the first hotel in the Valley to accommodate travelers, many of whom were women.
