Map Sampler (England)

This is a Map sampler. It is dated ca. 1790 and we acquired it in 1976. Its medium is silk and paint on wool and its technique is cross, split and half cross on plain weave foundation; counted and uncounted stitches. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Unknown. It is credited Gift of Anonymous Donor from the Fraser/Martin Collection.

It is inscribed

"South Britain is divided into 62 counties 40 of which are called England and 12 of the most western Wales. There are 2 Universities 2 Arch-bishoprics and 24 bishoprics."
