Sample Book, Cotton Prints Samples
This is a Sample book. It is dated 1845–60 and we acquired it in 1973. Its medium is cardboard, paper, and cotton and its technique is samples printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Novelty dress prints of the mid-nineteenth century are evident in this French sample book. Unlike the luxurious woven silks of the eighteenth century that required skilled designers and weavers throughout the entire process, designs for printed cotton textiles were created for the most part anonymously.
