Chair (USA)
This is a chair. It was designed by Warren Platner and manufactured by Knoll Associates, Inc.. It is dated 1966 and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is bronze-plated steel, nylon upholstery. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
In designing this chair, Platner intended to create a hand-crafted chair to mimic the machine-made look that was popular in the mid-nineteenth century. This design was meant to encourage the viewer to think about the merging of technology and creative arts, although this intention is not immediately apparent from viewing the chair. The wire form, designed to cradle the sitter, required 1,400 individual welds to assemble.
