Manokthiha (Myanmar (formerly known as Burma))
This is a Manokthiha. It is dated 18th century and we acquired it in 1967. Its medium is carved, painted, gilt wood. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This gilded winged figure was an architectural element in a Buddhist temple in Thailand. The physical trais of man, animal, and bird aremerged in teh creature as a way to bestow their varied powers on one mythical being. (Design for Life, 1997-98).
