Tie (Belgium)
This is a Tie. It is dated 1850–1900 and we acquired it in 1953. Its medium is linen and its technique is needle lace with ground of loop & twist with loop & twist return. It is a part of the Textiles department.
In the nineteenth century the lace ornaments which a woman wore on her head were most often a long band, narrow in the middle and wide at both ends. They were pinned into the hair with both ends hanging or pinned up, in the tradition of the cap streamers (barbes or lappets) of the eighteenth century.
